Food and drinks giant, PepsiCo has announced plans to use more renewable materials for its beverage packaging, as part of its goal to reduce its reliance on oil-based plastic.
PepsiCo global beverage packaging vice president Denise Lefebvre said that the firm would like its material to come from renewable materials and reduce the reliance on plastic, reports packagingnews.co.uk.
"The firm did not want to impact on food supplies, so would prefer to source agricultural by-products from its food business to source a sustainable bottle," Lefebvre said.
The company plans to make its plant-based bottle from bio-based raw materials, including switch grass, pine bark and corn husks and is also working to expand sources for the raw materials to organic waste from its food businesses.
The Pepsi bottle is expected to first appear on the market in pilot production in 2012.
PepsiCo's brands include Pepsi, Tropicana, Copella, 7UP and Walkers crisps. In March, it announced that it will be developing a PET bottle made from 100% plant-based materials using non-food sources.
